New Construction Provides Annual Savings

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

The Quality Schools Grant Project for the exterior (envelope) of the High School and Middle School is nearing its final stages. This project started three years ago with the Quality Schools Planning Grant. This was a $25,000 grant. The Planning Grant provided the needed funds to provide an assessment of our district's buildings and begin initial planning for a proposed project. Upon being awarded the Planning Grant, we went right to work making application for the Project Grant for $565,000. Upon award and approval from the Montana Legislature and the Governor, today, we are finally arriving at near project completion.

The project completion will not only provide an appealing exterior, but necessary insulation and roof repair as well as window and door replacements. This couldn't come at a better time with the inflated prices of propane and the extremes of last winter. The district paid $113,000 for propane in 2013-2014. That was 44,000 gallons of fuel. Our average fuel consumption is 40,000 gallons. Estimated saving could be as much as 20% in a year. The project has not only provided a new face lift, but will help offset other funding reductions through the estimated fuel savings.

Many of our constituents have asked what the final project will look like, so I have included several three dimensional renderings from the architect.

Construction Around the Corner

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

School construction is getting ready to get underway this Spring. The project is made possible by the Quality School Grant that Superintendent Bob Lewandowski made application for in behalf of the district. Lewandowski first made application for the Quality Schools Planning Grant that provided the foundation for assessment and planning needed to successfully win the Quality Schools Project Grant. Total grant appropriations total $550,000.

Quality School Grant Underway

 by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

On April 26, 2013 Governor Bullock signed house bill HB 15 into law. HB 15 appropriated the funds for the Quality School Grant Program for the 2015 biennium for public infrastructure projects.

Our district was awarded a portion of this competitive grant for $534,590.00. We were able to win this grant by first being awarded the Planning Grant for $25,000.00 through the Montana Department of Commerce in 2012. Planning Grant allowes our district to obtain the needed facility assessments and scores to competitively apply for the Quality Schools Grant.

This has been a long process, but is much needed by our district. I am extremely happy that we were able to win and secure this grant for our students and community. A half-a-million dollars is a lot of money. The Quality Schools Grant will allow our district to address the envelop needs of the middle and high schools. The much needed funding will fix roof problems, window and many of the exterior needs of our school.

The pictured rendering shows the planned construction that will begin early this spring and is set to be completed before the 2014-2015 school year.

Setting The Pace!

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

Welcome to MISSION!

It was great to be back from vacation and see the fantastic job done on the gym floor. The pictures I have posted do not do the floor justice. It really is a spectacle to see. You walk in the new entry in the high school and are greeted by a renovated gym facility that oozes school spirit and pride. There is a 20 foot bulldog in the center of the floor surrounded by thick blue boundary lines with MISSION on both ends. I can't wait until our students and fans have their first experience on it.

This next school year holds a lot of promise. Our academic focus on student success is becoming more acute. Our activity programs have high expectations after having very successful seasons this last year. As the facilities are being readied for the start of school, it's hard not to get excited.  HCA (Home Court Advantage) will be well supported by clean, well kept facilities! Well done building and grounds crew! Things are looking real good!

At Mission, we have "HCA Baby!"

Gym Floor Maintenance

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

The high school gym floor will be refinished this summer. The gym will be closed from June 10 to July 13, 2011 to address this need. All access and use of the gym will be restricted during this time to remove the current finishes that have built up over the last 13 years. The floor will be sanded and warped and damaged boards replaced. New lines and logos will be painted. This process is necessary to prevent human injury and permanent damage to the gym floor.

The layout to the right was reviewed by interested staff members and coaches for suggestions concerning lines, logos and paint on March 28, 2011. If you have additional ideas or suggestions please attend the community forum on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 6:00 PM in the District Board Room. All are invited! If you cannot make the meeting, please feel free to drop by my office or call beforehand and I will present your ideas at the meeting. Once the design is set, it will be presented to the board for final approval at the April 19, 2011 Regular Board Meeting.

See you there.

High School Entry Reaches Substantial Completion

New High School Entry Opened January 18, 2011
The Joyce Easter Student Commons Area
Direct Entry with the H.S. Offices and Attendance Station to the right.
Concession stand and gym & classroom entry.
by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

The High School Entry reached "substantial completion" on January 15, 2011. It is one of two construction projects the District has undertaken this year. Earlier the District completed the Multi-Purpose Complex which houses a new cafeteria, stage, technology center and special needs classroom. Both structures are at "substantial completion" which allows the district occupancy while the contractors complete items on a formal punch list. When visiting the facilities, you may notice a blemish or flaw in workmanship. These type of  items are on the punch list for the contractor to fix, but they do not prohibit occupancy.

The completion of the High School Entry presents a challenge in getting everyone to use the new entry into the school.  The old entry has been restricted to exit only. If you come to the old entry, you will notice appropriate signage indicating the the location of the new access.
We understand that this transition will take some time, but we encourage everyone to patiently work into the facility as the school staff will help you do so. It is imperative that we maintain student safety by monitoring those accessing the building. As always, we ask all visitors to check into the office before frequenting the school.

Thank you for your understanding. I hope you enjoy our new facility!

Facility Use

At the October 19, 2010 board meeting, the Board approved an Administrative Execution for St Ignatius School District #28 Board Policy 4010 Facility Use Agreement. The execution is simply a facility use agreement between the school district and those wishing to utilize its facilities. You may pick up a Facility Use Agreement at the District Office for all facility requests or you may down load it on line from our District website.

We ask that individuals filling out the form be specific in the facilities requested; for example: identify the multipurpose room, stage, elementary gym or kitchen not just the cafetorium or cafeteria as it is possible that multiple events can be taking place in those areas. Please note: Facilities include all buildings, elementary through high school (including classrooms), as well as all grounds (softball field, football field, track, football practice 1, football practice 2 and football practice 3). Turn all requests in to the Superintendent’s Office for approval by email or fax (406-745-4421). The District would like at least one week prior notice of the intended use.

The Facility Use Calendar is available on the school web page. You can visit this link to see an update schedule of current facility use as well as future planning. Please note, that if an event is not on this calendar, the district probably isn't aware of it happening within our facilities.

For more information, read the Administrative Execution and Policy posted on the St. Ignatius web site for a better understanding of prioritization and use of school facilities.

Stewardship Is Part of IT!

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

Our school district is "under construction" in many different ways. Building a climate of expectation is exemplified through the manifestations of new buildings to a renewed school spirit. To further flavor the changes taking place here at Mission, we need to consider a focus on stewardship.

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of stewardship is: 1) the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; 2) the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care.

Teaching students about stewardship is a difficult task since there are so many different ideas about what stewardship means. At this time the school will work towards developing a shared understanding of stewardship (treatment and care for goods and property entrusted to us).

We will try to make stewardship a focus for students and staff alike. Taking pride in excellence extends itself in many ways. We have already had a fantastic start to a great school year. Now we need to take HCA to the next level. When visitors come to our campus to watch a game, walk our hallways, come into a classroom, I hope they will leave with the impression that even though we may not have a lot at Mission, we take pride in what we have here at St Ignatius. With this in mind, we have some work to do to bring everything up to this standard of expectation.

At the K-12 Assembly, on the first day of school, I shared with the students and staff the secret to success. That secrete is "Learning takes Work!" The initiative for stewardship calls for the implementation of the IT FACTOR. In an earlier blog, I described IT as:
"If you walk the halls at our school you can smell it, see it in the classrooms and feel it at our ball games. Something special is taking place here at St. Ignatius, I invite you to be a part of "IT!"

IT can't be described in one word. IT is complicated. IT exist because our students, faculty, parents and community BELIEVE! We are Mission, the standard by which others will measure!"
To be the standard by which others measure takes WORK! I believe that Mission is a community of hard workers! I like what I have seen and am proud to be a part of IT!

Our district must work hard at IT! The district will be utilizing as many resources as possible to pick up school grounds and correct dysfunctional elements and blemishes. For example: we will obtain adequate trash receptacles for hallways, entryways, bleachers, and parking areas. If we want people to pick up after themselves, they have to have a place to put it.

In addition, the district is addressing storage and buildings that are not being utilized and costing the district money to maintain. There are places in this school district that certainly need to be cleaned out and up. In past efforts to be conservative, we have stored most everything of value. NOW much of what has been stored is dated and not worth the space it takes. Addressing these issues will be difficult, but needed.

I am asking everyone who reads this blog to "pitch in" and help. Making sure students learn is everyone's responsibility and as said before: learning takes work. Work is a big part of IT! Stewardship is a concept that needs to be shared by all. We've got a great school and community! We invite you to be a part of IT!

Construction Progress

It is with great anticipation and excitement that we wait for the current construction project to be complete; however, like many construction projects, there are delays. At this time all construction focus is on the lunch room and elementary addition. The progress of this addition is detrimental to the functionality of our school. All students (elementary - high school) are fed in the cafeteria/lunch room. In addition, the construction staging is taking place on the elementary playgrounds. Obviously we need both, the school playgrounds (upper and lower elementary) and the lunch room, to fluently educate students.

The district architect and project manager keep assuring me that the project will be far enough along that it will not have any significant effects on our educational delivery. I'm trying not to be pessimistic, but time will tell. At any rate, the building principals and the administrative team are working out scenarios in case the project is not completed to the state of "approved occupancy." We will have contingency plans in place so school will start on time! We look forward to seeing kids on August 26!
