Resolve, Resilience and Dedication

by Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

It is always a pleasure acknowledging senior students and athletes. For the past several years we have included senior athletes on a promotional poster with a sports schedule. Whether a senior starts on a team or not, their presence contributes a great deal of leadership. The fact that they have the resolve to continue to participate in extra-curricular activities speaks volumes about their resilience and dedication. We need these types of leaders in all walks of life. I am certainly very proud of their contribution.

Basketball Exemplifies Home Court Advantage

by Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

Nothing is as exciting as a home basketball contest. It brings small communities together to celebrate, communicate and cheer on the home team. Mission is no different. It is always exciting to see what the Winter Sports Season has in store with new coaches and players.  Home Court Advantage (HCA) is best described through one of these events. Despite differences in a small town, everyone comes together to cheer on their colors and mascots.

The Bulldogs have celebrated HCA since September 2010. Safety, Support and Belonging have lead the way for increased academic scores, resiliency and excellence in all matters. It is the core of our mantra "Mission Possible." It is the foundation of Mission's Hierarchy of Needs.

As said in my 2010 post Now that's HCA Baby!: "Every student is VALUED in this SCHOOL! This is our school, and our student’s home away from home. It is a place of WELCOME and family for everyone. I feel strongly about the virtues that Home Court Advantage represents and even though this is just a symbol I believe it will help remind our students to act accordingly. Even more important, I hope that HCA will extend into this community. The circle in the middle will not be complete until this concept is realized."

Today, I believe this district and community have "realized" this concept. The photos shared here are a big part of identifying Bulldog Belonging. I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I do sharing them with you. Go Bulldogs!

Now that's HCA Baby!

Wrestling Kicks Off Winter Sport Season

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

I had the opportunity to take in the Owen Wrestling Invitational on Saturday. The cooperative effort of the Mission-Charlo did awesome! The team placed 4th overall. Jamie Mullins placed 2nd, Trent Dennison 3rd, Gregory Weatherwax 3rd, and Ethan Goss-Dickie 4th.

Mission senior Jamie Mullins is about to pin his Ronan opponent in the second round.

Mullins finally gets the anticipated pin with a slap on the mat.

It may seem like pins come easy with Gregory Weatherwax smiling for his family as he pins his opponent in the third round.
I was at the wrong corner of the mat for this pose.

The wrestling team kicked off what should be an exciting Winter Sports Season. I hope to see you at the game or match. Good luck to all of our students and teams!

Out of 725 photos I took at the Invitational, I edited 118 pictures. Almost all matches were photographed. Please read the directions below to see additional wrestling photos.

Missoula Children's Theatre Does It Again

The cast of Blackbeard the Pirate

by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

Missoula Children's Theatre presented "Blackbeard the Pirate" on November 21 and 22. It was a fantastic presentation of Mission children on stage. It never ceases to amaze me how much confidence and growth take place when a child has an opportunity to be on "stage." Parents are so proud of their children and their children as so happy to make their families proud. No matter the production, Missoula Children's Theatre makes our kids look great!

Special thanks to everyone who has contributed to make this production an annual event.

NOW that's HCA Baby!

WINTER SPORTS PROMOTIONAL POSTERS

I worked with Activity Director Rich Ferris to developed a Winter Sports Calendar for Wrestling, Boys & Girls Basketball. We were very fortunate to have a number of community businesses and members support our teams and purchase posters to put up in their establishments. The proceeds will be used to off-set unforeseen costs like the new track program here at Mission.

I would like to thank all of those that pitched in to help make this endeavor successful. It is great exposure for our senior athletes as well as our school and community. Now lets get our fans to sequel this effort and come out and support our kids. See the schedules for times and dates.

Tracking Track

The St. Ignatius/Ronan Track Cooperative is in its 16th year. Both boys and girls at Mission and Ronan share the same colors, coaches and facilities. It has been a relationship that has resulted in success. As classifications are shuffled around, it could effect the future cooperative. I am sure that both schools will do everything possible to maintain this cooperative endeavor.  I have had the opportunity to attend the first two track meets at Corvallis and Ronan. It is great to see rivalries come together as a team and compete together.

Girls Softball Down And Dirty

The Lady Bulldogs' first game of the season was met with wet weather. Our Ladies opened at home against Deer Lodge on March 30, 2012. As the game progressed, so did the rain. By the end of the game, the field looked like Gene Kelly had just danced across it. It became a muddy mess. The Bulldogs persevered to over come the weather challenges, closing out the match with the 10 point mercy rule in the sixth inning winning 15-5.  Well done Bulldogs!

MIssion Valley All-Stars

The Mission Valley All-Star Boys and Grils Basketball games held at SKC didn't disappoint the crowd. The boys game went down to the last second. There weren't a lot of opportunities for the usual all-star showboating that is common in most all-star games as the desire to win the game took president. It was enjoyable to watch both matches.

Mission was represented by Austin Durglo and Dillon Evens for the boys; and Lauren Erickson, Brenna Steel and Stephanie Lewandowski for the girls. Brenna was not able to participate due to a late season injury. All of these athletes had a great season for the Bulldogs. We were proud to have them represent our school.

Well done Bulldog Basketball!

Helping Students Develop A Love For Reading!

Once the students meet their goal by the deadline, a group of school officials, Mr. Krantz, Mr. Durglo and Mr. Phillips (pictured on right) will be sent to the Reading Teepee immediately after the varsity basketball game versus Charlo on January 20, 2011. If the numbers of books are doubled, a second group will be selected, Mrs. Stobie, Mrs. Plant and Mrs. Weaselhead (pictured left) to spend the evening in one of the teepees.  If, by some miracle, the students triple the goal, Superintendent Lewandowski (center) will join the others for a winter’s night in the Teepee.
 by Superintendent Robert "Bob" Lewandowski

RATIONALE

Reading is fundamental in all aspects of our children’s education. Learning how to comprehend, read fluently and apply what has been read is critical to educational success. In order to become a great reader takes practice. With this in mind, the school has developed a few independent reading goals to help accommodate our children’s love for reading. The more we can get children to read, the better readers they will become that is why we have the Reading Teepees.
As you have probably seen, there are two teepees between the elementary school and the library. The Native American Studies classes put up the teepees and provided instruction related to culture and heritage to elementary through high school students. It is their intention to develop an encampment for students to observe. In addition to student exposure of the teepees in their NAS courses, the elementary will put the teepees to further use and expose school officials to a winter night’s stay in the teepee.
For some reason, students love reversing the roles between educator and student. It is surprising how hard they will work to be able to tell their teacher or administrator what they need to do instead of the other way around. At any rate, it is all done in fun, and that is what makes the difference.  I know I am not looking forward to spending cold winter’s night out in the elements in a teepee. You can bet, if I do, it will be for good reason, and I can’t think of a better reason than independent student reading. If our students reach their reading goal – it will be an evening that won’t soon be forgotten.

RULES
Two (2) books by January 6, 2012 (following Christmas Break) with a minimum number of pages (see page minimums below). The books need to be read at an independent level (in class or at home).
  • 10 pages for kindergartners
  • 20 pages for first graders
  • 30 pages for second graders
  • 40 pages for third graders
  • 50 pages for fourth graders
  • 60 pages for fifth graders
Classroom teachers will collect the proper student verification and turn it into the office. Verifications will be totaled and updated for students to see on a bulletin board. (The verifications will also be given to the identified educator to read while spending the evening in the teepee). Students must verify their reading by providing the following:
  •  Kindergartners: draw a picture of what they read or a paper with three new words they learned.
  • First Grade: write a sentence about what they read
  • Second Grade: write two sentences about what they read
  • Third Grade: write a paragraph (at least three sentences) about what they read
  • Fourth Grade: write two paragraphs (at least three sentences each) about what they read
  • Fifth Grade: write three paragraphs (at least three sentences each) about they read (Introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs).
NOTE: The following heading must accompany each verification:
  • Student Name
  • Student Grade
  • Title of Book.
Weekly updates will be provided to the school on the bulletin board hanging across from the elementary computer lab in the multi-purpose facility.

PARENTAL ASSISTANCE

Parents are encouraged to help their children read at the independent level and work with their child to complete their verification material.

Parent Assistance Tips:
  1. Provide a quite environment for reading: (Just setting a specific time aside for reading will help your child focus and begin reading as a habit).
  2. Reduce surrounding distractions: (Turn off the television, radio or electronic equipment that might distract your child).
  3. Read aloud to your child; (Read a sentence/paragraph or two to get your child started. Encourage them to read aloud back to you. This help reading fluency).
  4. Model reading: (While your child reads, pick up the newspaper, a magazine or book and join them. Your example is most powerful).
  5. Ask your child to explain what they have read: (Don't be afraid to ask you child about the story they are reading. This helps their comprehension and gives them positive feedback in showing that you care).
  6. Make reading fun: (What ever you do, have fun! This starts with a book that is written at your child's independent reading level. The books they are reading independently should not be difficult. Independent reading is practice. If your child struggles with the reading material, talk to his/her teacher about your child's reading selection. A difficult reading selection often times discourages young readers).
The READING CHALLENGE has been made; if the students reach their goals the selected school officials must spend the winter’s night in the teepee the evening of January 20, 2012 following the varsity game (Brrrrrr…). This initiative is all about fun and developing a love for reading!

Ladies and gentlemen, start your reading!!!

Well Done Lady Bulldogs!

The Lady Bulldogs downed Plains in 4 sets. It was great seeing the girls get back to their winning ways. Good luck at Florance!

On a side note: The Head Coach was pretty amazing when she sang the National Anthem. The student support section was equally superb!

Well done Bulldogs!
